Sophie Turner
Sophie Turner
Sophie Turner is a Donor Conceived Person (DCP) from Aotearoa, New Zealand. She is a founding member of Donor Conceived Aotearoa, an advocacy group founded by and for donor conceived New Zealanders in 2021 to improve donor conception practices in New Zealand. In addition to supporting advocacy and education initiatives in New Zealand, Sophie has also contributed to legislative reform in Queensland, Australia where she currently resides.
Sophie’s parents conceived her using a sperm donor in the mid-1980s, through a hospital-based program in Wellington, New Zealand. Uncharacteristically for the time, the donor assigned to her parents donated with identity release provisions. Sophie’s parents also ignored the prevailing advice from the era and told her and her brother at a young age that they were donor conceived.
Sophie and her brother have nine half siblings – seven of which were conceived by different families using the same donor, and two of which are the donor’s raised children. Sadly, Sophie and her siblings have no identifying information about several of their donor conceived siblings. She has been working to identify her missing siblings for several years. In 2021, she discovered that one of her missing siblings was a close friend who she had known since kindergarten, but she still has three more siblings to find.
